Tree Work in Kent

Kent Tree Service in the Green River Valley

Kent’s tree rules focus on public trees and critical areas. Any tree between your property line and the curb needs a written permit from the city before it’s pruned or removed, and trees in the public right-of-way can be removed only for fire, safety or health hazards. Work that would harm a critical area is regulated separately.

A Tree City USA since 2002, Kent sits along the Green River — a Shoreline of Statewide Significance — and its canopy, about 28% in 2018, is below the average of comparable cities. Our ISA Certified Arborists will tell you what applies to your property, in a free written estimate before anything is booked.

Know the Rules

Kent’s Tree Rules in Plain English

From the Kent City Code (KCC 6.10, 8.07 and 11.06):

✓Any tree between the property line and the curb needs a written permit from the city to plant, remove, trim or prune.
✓Trees in the public right-of-way can be removed only for fire, safety or health hazards, with a hold-harmless agreement.
✓The city maintains residential street trees.
✓Destroying or altering vegetation in a way that would harm a critical area is regulated under KCC 11.06.
✓Emergency work to prevent an immediate threat is exempt, but impacts to critical areas must be mitigated afterwards.
✓Owners must keep 8 feet of clearance over sidewalks and 16.5 feet over streets, and remove dead trees that are a hazard.

Not sure whether a tree sits in the right-of-way or near a critical area? We’ll check during a free on-site inspection. Our permit guide compares rules across nearby cities.
